What Happens If You Never Tune Your Piano? | JP Piano Tuning

Most piano owners know they should tune their piano regularly — but life gets busy, and it’s easy to let it slide. A year becomes two, two becomes five, and suddenly you can’t remember the last time a technician came to the house. So what’s actually happening to your piano in the meantime?

Stage 1 — Gradual Pitch Drop (Months 1–12)

In the first year without tuning, the piano drifts gradually flat. The strings lose tension slowly and the piano begins to sound slightly dull and muddy compared to a freshly tuned instrument. Most people don’t notice this because it happens so gradually — like not noticing a child growing taller until you measure them against the door frame.

Stage 2 — Noticeable Deterioration (1–3 Years)

By the second or third year, the pitch drop becomes significant. The piano will sound noticeably wrong to anyone with a musical ear. Playing along with other instruments or recorded music becomes increasingly difficult. Children learning on the piano are now training their ears to incorrect pitches.

Stage 3 — Pitch Raise Required (3+ Years)

After three or more years without tuning, the piano has typically dropped so far below concert pitch that a standard tuning is no longer possible in a single visit. The strings need to be gradually brought back up to tension in a process called a pitch raise — essentially a rough tuning that brings the piano close to correct pitch — followed by a fine tuning. This takes longer and costs more than a standard tuning.

Stage 4 — Structural Risk (5+ Years)

In extreme cases of neglect, the uneven tension across the piano’s strings and soundboard can cause structural problems. Bridges can crack, soundboards can develop issues, and the overall integrity of the instrument can be compromised. At this point, restoration becomes expensive — and in some cases, not economically worthwhile.
