How Long Does a Piano Tuning Take?
It's one of the first questions people ask when booking a piano tuning — and the honest answer is that it depends on a few factors. Here's a clear breakdown of what to expect.
A Standard Tuning
For a piano that has been tuned within the last year or two and is in reasonable condition, a standard tuning typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes. This includes:
- A visual inspection of the piano's condition
- Checking the current pitch and stability
- The tuning itself — working through all notes methodically
- A final check pass to verify stability
When It Takes Longer
- Pitch raise required: If the piano has dropped significantly below concert pitch, a pitch raise must be carried out before the fine tuning can begin. This adds 30–45 minutes to the appointment and is why pitch raise tunings are priced slightly higher.
- Minor repairs: If small issues are identified during the tuning — a sticking key, a loose part, a buzzing component — these are attended to as part of the visit. Minor repairs under 15 minutes are included free of charge.
- Severely neglected pianos: A piano that hasn't been tuned in many years may require multiple passes to achieve a stable result.
What You Don't Need to Do
You don't need to prepare anything before the technician arrives. Just make sure the piano is accessible and that the room is reasonably quiet during the tuning — the technician needs to hear every note clearly.
You're welcome to stay in the room and watch, or leave the technician to work. Most customers find the tuning process genuinely interesting to observe.
